Missions: Renewal Through Serving
On a chilly Saturday morning, students and staff piled onto the French Camp Academy bus. The dawn’s early light slowly illuminated the parking lot and the efforts being made to speak Spanish were followed by bursts of laughter.
Onward to Mexico
On January 17, a mission team to Montemorelos and San Juanito, Mexico left FCA for a weeklong opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ by serving others. Doug Herring, a former FCA staff member and a seasoned veteran of mission trips to Mexico led the group.
FCA Mission Model
The model for the FCA mission work is based on Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Missions begin at home and move into our campus, the surrounding communities and then to other cultures.
How We Did It
French Camp Academy has always been mission-minded. This year, the
missions program is being directly funded. Individuals and groups
donate funds. Most importantly, our students and staff volunteer to
work the snack shack at campus events. Fifty per cent of the profits go
to the general missions fund and fifty per cent to the homes, based on
their participation for their own mission endeavors.
What We Did
After a wearying 12-hour ordeal at the border, the team of FCA
students and staff reached the Royer’s Children’s Home. Some of the
team went to San Juanito to build a children’s ministry building.
Others stayed at the Home and worked. From putting up walls and
building trusses, to cleaning bathrooms, to playing with the children,
the trip was a success.
Success
Spending energy on others for the Lord can actually be energizing. Part
of the encouragement to keep on going came from knowing that people
were praying. In addition, each of the team members received letters of
encouragement with Bible verses included from people back home. As one
young lady said, “Our success was certainly a testament to the power of
prayer and encouragement.”
QUOTES: “…I know God was working.
The children clung to us…They were so thankful that we were there and
are so thankful for everything they have.”
“God told me what's best for me and
that I have a place in the mission field to serve Him."
"I will be more grateful for the life Christ has blessed me with.
I
want to be as loving and open as those people were. I want to be
a
symbol of Christ's love as they (the Mexicans) were.”
