History of the Council House Cafe' Building

A meeting place for Greenwood LeFlore, last chief of the Choctaw Indian Nation east of the Mississippi, and his chiefs during tribal negotiations, this cabin is a picturesque piece of the past.  It is a 17’ x 17’ structure built of white oak logs hewn to fit with broad axe and adz and was constructed around 1820.   Donated in 1967 to French Camp Academy, the cabin was restored as a Bicentennial Project of staff and students.  Its logs came from the property of George P. Ritchey near Carrollton, Mississippi.

It now faithfully serves as a small eatery for weary travelers and locals featuring hearty soups and sandwiches made with freshly baked French Camp bread, broccoli salad, and an assortment of desserts including our famous Mississippi Mud Cake.  Guests can enjoy the “good eats” inside a rustic dining room or take-in the fresh air on deck patio beneath the Oaks.
